Right from the beginning The Woolshed has had a desire to give back to the local community it is a part of. The Woolshed has a long term partnership with Lighthouse, which is a faith based social enterprise that has been helping people for over 47 years.
Two of Lighthouse’s key community initiatives that the Woolshed currently ‘gives back’ to are highlighted below:
Lighthouse Youth Initiative
The Youth Initiative is located on the same site as the Woolshed. It is a residential program for youth aged between 18-24 years experiencing homelessness, however more than that, Lighthouse Youth Initiative supports young people in resolving complex trauma and as a result, helps them move forward into a brighter future. Our main focus is providing a safe environment for young people to experience stability, often for the first time and to feel accepted, loved and respected. From this foundation, we are able to successfully engage young people in employment and training opportunities, as well as teaching the skills necessary to live independently. We love to see young people develop healthy minds, successful relationships and engage with their community in meaningful and lasting ways.
Lighthouse Community Kitchen
This innovative community gathering is located at Railway Station Square in Wollongong. Lighthouse Community Kitchen feels much like a pop-up restaurant each Thursday night, providing dinner and dessert for anyone who wishes to come along. It is a sit down meal that feeds over 100 people every week. All meals are prepared by volunteers in our onsite industrial kitchen and served free of charge.
It aims to bring dignity and value to people in our community regardless of background, living situation or socioeconomic status.
To donate to either of these initiatives or for more information please call 42 299 744.
You can also give to these initiatives at our ‘give back‘ stand located in The Woolshed.
The Woolshed are also looking for more community partnerships and other initiatives to highlight throughout the year. If you wish to be a part of our ‘salt of the earth‘ initiatives please Contact Us.
